UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern
UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern consists of three stages - Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Civil Services Exam, also known as IAS Exam, is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit suitable candidates for IAS, IPS, IFS, and other allied services.
UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted to assess the overall capabilities of candidates. A comprehensive understanding of the UPSC Exam Pattern helps candidates manage time effectively and align preparation with exam requirements.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern For IAS Preliminary Examination
UPSC CSE Prelims consists of two papers: General Studies I and CSAT. CSAT is qualifying in nature, while marks obtained in General Studies Paper I determine selection for UPSC Mains.
There is negative marking for wrong answers. One-third of the marks allotted for a question will be deducted as penalty for a wrong answer. No marks are deducted for unattempted questions.
- ✓ It is mandatory for all candidates to appear for both General Studies and CSAT to qualify for Mains.
- ✓ The score obtained in Prelims will not be added to the final score.
- ✓ UPSC CSE Prelims is only for screening purposes.
- ✓ The question paper of Prelims will be bilingual in Hindi and English.
- ✓ There is negative marking of one-third for every incorrect answer in both papers.
UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern For IAS Main Examination
The IAS Mains Exam consists of qualifying and merit-ranking papers. Paper A and Paper B are qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in these papers are not added to the final ranking. All other papers are evaluated for merit.
- ✓ Except for language papers, Paper A and Paper B, scores in all other papers determine rank.
- ✓ The merit score is calculated out of 1750 marks.
- ✓ It is mandatory to score at least 25% in each paper to be evaluated during final selection.
- ✓ Candidates must write answers in the answer sheets provided by UPSC. No extra sheets will be provided.
