UPSC CSAT Paper 2

CSAT Aptitude Classes

Aptitude is a variety of entertainment programme — patterns, logic, jumpcuts and accuracy for IAS Prelims CSAT.

With a flawless 100% in Mathematics at both SSLC and HSC levels, Raja Sir demonstrated his academic brilliance early on. His aptitude was further recognized when he secured Rank 1 in the prestigious Aptitude Test conducted by the Ministry of Defence. Continuing this legacy of excellence, he was a consistent ‘S’ and ‘A’ grader in Engineering Mathematics at Anna University’s Guindy Campus, reinforcing his mastery of the subject and his reputation as a scholar with exceptional analytical skills.

What is Aptitude?

One should remember that aptitude is nothing but playing with alphabets and numbers. Every aptitude question has some hidden pattern in it.

If you crack the hidden pattern, it becomes easy to solve aptitude questions. Cracking the hidden pattern needs good reasoning ability. Command over reasoning brings speed and accuracy.

1. Maths Section

Example 1 - Square of 85

If you need to find the value of square of 85, you should not take pen and pencil. You should immediately identify the pattern: 5 × 5 = 25 and 8 × 9 = 72. So, 85² = 7225.

Example 2 - BC × BC = ADB

In this type of problem, students often try every possibility and lose time. Instead, observe the inherent pattern. In the tenth place we have B, and in the answer side also B appears in the unit place.

It can happen only when B = 1 and C = 9. Once you crack this pattern, the answer is easy: 19 × 19 = 361. The key is to crack such patterns within a matter of seconds.

Do Not Depend Only on Formula Method

Memorizing formulas can hinder your thought process. If you know only formulas, you may try to fit every problem into a formula. This eats your time. For CSAT, go by logic, shortcuts, strategy and tactics.

CSAT Time Strategy

In the examination hall, after deducting time for shading and understanding the question, you may be left with hardly 35 seconds for a question. Within that time, you need to solve the problem correctly.

  • Be well versed with the identification of patterns.
  • Sharpen your skills.
  • Learn tactics, shortcuts and timing sense.
  • Practice a variety of questions.
  • Use logical guessing, elimination and back calculations where required.

Be Cunning with Numbers and Alphabets

It is not always possible, and not always essential, to solve a problem fully. You can and must use logical guessing, elimination and back calculations to arrive at the answer.

The one-stop solution to perform well in aptitude tests is: “Be cunning with numbers and alphabets.”

2. English Section

Even in the English section, similar patterns and relations exist. One needs to understand and crack the English section with good command over basic rules of grammar and vocabulary.

Reading comprehension in CSAT requires careful understanding of the passage, logical interpretation and elimination of wrong options. The questions are not merely about English language, but about reasoning through the passage.

Passage-Based Question Practice

In comprehension passages, questions may test the central idea, tone, inference, comparison, and the meaning of phrases in context. Aspirants must avoid blind guessing and instead use calculated elimination.

Sample Question Areas

  • Comparison between leaders or viewpoints in the passage.
  • Meaning of expressions such as “top-dressing”.
  • Reason behind a legislative process being considered arduous.
  • Significance of major judicial or social moments.
  • Identifying the crux or central idea of the passage.

While answering, be careful not to attempt a question that is completely blind to you. However, you can take calculated risks when you have more than 60% confidence.

Myths and Facts about CSAT

Myth 1: CSAT is like CAT / Bank PO Exam

Fact: Treating CSAT like Bank PO or MBA entrance exams is a great blunder. CSAT is unique. It assesses suitability for public services, not merely banking or business administration.

Myth 2: CSAT is Very Tough

Fact: CSAT Paper 2 is a qualifying paper. Students should not over-emphasize CSAT at the cost of Mains preparation. The right approach is to prepare for Mains and Prelims together.

Myth 3: CSAT is Only English and Maths

Fact: CSAT consists of General Studies and Aptitude. Paper 2 includes reasoning, comprehension, quantitative ability and application-oriented questions. It requires logic, timing, shortcuts and practice.

Practice Makes a Man Perfect

All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.

GOOD LUCK!
